I just swapped out the stock 12ax7 with a Tung Sol 12ax7. To my ears there was a difference in the overall tone, a little brighter, less muddy sound. I agree that the OD pedal does help bring more brightness to the HT5's distortion which in turn make it sound more saturated. I've been using my pedal in front of the amp too.
