using IPod into MP3 / Line Iput of a HT1R Head

Has anyone successfully used an IPod to play backing tracks on a HT1R Head using its MP3 / Line Input 1/4" Jack Socket. If so please explain simply how you did it, tried unsuccessfully myself , no volume, is a preamp of some description required ?

Have run an HT1R head for some time now, the original tubes did not last long and were replaced with a "Phil Kit) from Watford Valves and the result was WOW. Was running it through a 4 x 12 cab with a couple of Fender and a couple of Celestion Seventy 80,s and it sounded great, but just too loud for...
