Sounds like a bad and/or microphonic power tube to me. I'd start with a new matched set and a re-bias.

There's lots of ways to do it. Tone is a very subjective thing. My suggestion would be to get a dirt box and just try it. First put it in front of the amp on the clean channel and see what it can do. Then you can roll the drive back on the pedal and try the OD channel, then put it in the effects loo...
