Ht 20 Problems nad Questions

Hey guys new here, and I've got some questions. Alright when i step on my footswitch on the dirty channel I have to keep holding it down to stay on the clean. And when I'm on the clean channel and i step on the footswitch nothing happens. Is it faulty or what? Also the gain on my amp is alot less then what ive heard from youtube. Maybe its my pickups, Alnico Pro 2 in a Les Paul, that are the problem. Thanks, Izzy.
