Hello friend....well there are three (3) sockets for pre amp tubes..V1, V2 and V3 we call them.

And there four BIG power tubes....the pre amp tube slot closest to the power tubes is V1 and the ECC82 goes there, the other two (V2 and V3) you should put ECC83.....good luck

Actually, you're right - the tube closest to the power tubes is where the ECC82 is placed. However, that is V3 - V1 is furthest away, and is most critical in your tone, and gain stages.

New Blackstar HT-100 owner here!

I'm not sure how significant the 12au7 tube is suppose to make in the PI position except that the 12au7 is a very low gain tube comparing to the 12ax7 and 12aT7. I would think that the 12au7 is suppose to help add clarity and noise as oppose to using a 12ax7 which has a higher gain.

I replaced the stock preamp tubes with a NOS Ecc83 Mullard, JAN Sylvania and Telefunken, I tried the PI with RCA 12au7 but didn't notice a significant change over the Telefunken except that there is a bit more gain which I like but at the same time I haven't put it in a live situation so I don't know for sure how different it sounds between the two.

I may switch power tubes with SED EL34's. I'll have to hear how it compares to the stock chinese TAD EL34's. So far I like the TAD's in this amp so far.

After swapping the ecc83/12ax7 Telefunken and 12au7 RCA back and forth I was able to tell the difference. I can see why Blackstar chose to use the 12au7 in PI position. It certainly gives the Ht-100 the clarity that we hear. The telefunken made the amp distorted much quicker making it a bit muddier but at the same time gave it a bit more volume. The RCA was the opposite, a little lower in volume but more definition in your notes.

i swapped my power amp tubes in my stage 60 to JJ EL34L's and the improvement was significant. I biased it at 52.5mV. i think it is a little bit too loud now. i am gonna put an ECC81 in V3 (thanks Stage60 for the correction) to tame up the overall vol and the clean channel especially...

ECC81 = 12AT7?
Does V3 form sound of Clean and OD1? And doesn't affect OD2?

And if i put an ECC81 in V2 then gain of both channel lessen, doesn't it?

I dont think so since V1 and V2 are not phase inverter...yes the pre amp tubes are interchangeable, especially since the 12AX7 has the maximum output so anything else is less in gain BUT, i would say dont put anything but 12AX7 in V1 and V2!
