Unusual tube combo...

I was messing around with my Stage 60 today because, I've posted before, I've been trying to bring the gain down a bit for direct recording because although the gain was perfect "live" (with JJ ECC83s and an 82), it's far too over-the-top for direct recording. So I changed tubes, and combinations of tubes about half a dozen times, and somewhere along the way, I accidentally wound up putting a 12AY7 in V2, and a ECC832/12DW7 in V1. It actually sounds fantastic! The 832 really kicks up the OD1 and makes it much more usable, to my ears, while the 12AY7 brings OD2 down quite a bit, but it's still very nice sounding. With the gain at about 9 o'clock, it's almost a JMP-ish kind of crunch. The channels also are quite a bit more balanced, and aren't as dissimilar as they were before (which can be good or bad, depending on what you're going for, I guess).

Yep...a 12AY7 in the gain channel works well for a more useable range of OD.

That's cool. I'm going to make a note of that. I've always thought the clean channel (HT-40 in my case) could use some a little gusto.
