Sorted the problem with my little amp, I had a crook valve, They seemed alright to play but obviously some part had died. Replace them both at the same time, so I have gone from the stock TAD ECC82 and ECC83 to an old Phillips ECC82 and an even older Mullard ECC83, very nice.
