blackstar ht1 metal hum/buzz louder with effects pedals.

hello,
help needed.
i have just got the amp. plugged in with everything turned down, the amp gives a low hum that i am not worried about.
ok turn the gain and volume up with or without the guitar volume and i get a ssssshhhhh, kinda like radio interference noise. this increases as the gain and/or volume is increased.
now stick a pedal in front, ehx pitchfork or zoom multi or ehx cathedral and the noise increases to 3 or 4 times in loudness. i have only tried one pedal at a time.
yes i need the pedal although i don't think the noise without pedal should be there.
to the best of my knowledge its not my leads or guitars.
is this normal or is it a fault and i need to return it?
