Every time I bent over my HT-1R, I burned my retinas because the power LED is way too bright. With what was left of my eyesight, I found R81 (near the center of the circuit board) is the current limiting resistor for the LED and is 1k. I replaced it with a 47k and that dimmed the LED acceptably. Additionally, I carefully sanded the LED and filed the top so it is more diffuse.

Since R81 is a surface mount resistor, don't try this mod unless you are good at soldering.

It will also void your warranty.

Thanks for the tip but I'm unable to perform the mod as I went blind from glancing at the LED a few months ago.
