HT-5 or HT-20

i need a new amp for both bedroom and band practice but i don't know whether i should get the 5 watt or 20 watt. can the 5 watt go louder than a drummer and can the clean get around that loudness without breaking up too bad?

or if not, can the 20 watt get decent tones at lower volumes? i live in the country so i can get quite loud, but obviously not too loud as other people live with me

so what would be the most appropriate wattage for my needs?

I have a HT-5 combo. You can't get super clean tones at that volume. With my humbuckers (SD Alnico II Pro and JB) it breaks up at around 10 o'clock on the volume. Overdrive is fine but rather get a HT20 ,if you like the tone, for your needs.

you could live the dream - get the Series One-45 combo and use the DPR to keep the volume down at home - but i guess that you could buy both the HT 5 and 20 for what the S1 costs

I use my HT-20 at home all the time. I also live in the country for the most part, so I don't have any immediate neighbors either, but you can still get totally useable sounds out of it at lower volumes. Plus, with the Emulated Out, you can plug into a recorder or audio interface and use headphones.

It'll also definitely keep up well with a band in practice and for small gigs. Larger gigs will probably require having it mic'd though.

I`ve been using a HT5h as a stand in between gigs into a 2x12, at band practice the dirty channel will keep up with a medium hitting rock drummer (i.e. not a heavy hitting metal drummer with double kicks) ok, however, the clean breaks up quite early, so you have no chance for a spanky clean tone, full up it`s not really dirty, just quite crunchy.

Like gt said, the 20`s a much safer option.

Another vote for the HT-20. At least as good (if not: better) than the HT-5 at low volumes, but can go that extra mile when you need it. If you can afford it, I would look for the head version and a good cab, I was not too fond of the combo, although that's matter of taste.

The combo has a yucky speaker in it, seriously it needs to go, the amp is 10x better with something nice.
