You don't need a Blackstar foot-switch, but what you need depends on how old the head is. The early HT-5 models used a non-latching footswitch. Newer models use a latching type.

You should be able to, but I'm not sure when they switched (I do know it did not coincide with the addition of reverb...it was before that). The serial number should be 14 digits with the first two in parenthesis. The four digits immediately following the parenthesis are the year/month it was made. So (21)1203XXXXXXXX would be March 2012.
Your best bet might be to go to a music store and buy a latching fooswitch. If it doesn't work, then return it and get a non-lathing one.
