HT-DISTX lacking gain...

I've just got my HT-DISTX pedal, which I'm using as my front drive in-front of my Laney Head, because I thought it would give me a real tough death metal tone. However I've found that it's seriously lacking in gain, it feels muddy, and doesn't really produce anything heavier than my laney head can already do.

Is there something possibly wrong with the tube in it, or could it be something else...


Any help greatly appreciated!
