when you plug in headphones it does not automatically cut the sound output from the cabinet. the salesperson at the store told me to unplug the cabinet to play with headphones but it seems to me that this could damage the amp. How to play headphones in silence without risking the amplifier?

I can answer this myself; just set master vol to 0.
