Multi effects with amp sim into HT5 mk2

I have just bought an HT5 Mk2, which has an effects loop. I also have a Headrush MX5 multi effects unit that I want to run thru the amp.
That seems straightforward enough... mono output from the MX5 into the preamp input of the HT5. That works fine.
I want to also add an amp sim into the multi effects, so I need to output the MX5 into just the power amp using the effects loop return. I have tried the MX5 main output and also the effects loop output into the amp effects loop Return, but no sound ..... what am I doing wrong?
